Looking After Your Own Donkey
The ongoing need for true self-care
Roger: It’s easy to neglect myself with so many responsibilities.
Mursid: It’s our job to look after our deeper need for self-care.
A tired traveller stopped at an inn for the night. The innskeeper assured him he’d have a comfortable bed, with complete quiet in his room.
“But what about my donkey? Will he have a nice bed of straw and good grass to eat?”
“Of course!” assured the innskeeper. “I have a lovely barn for him.”
Restless in bed, the man woke up concerned about his travelling companion. As he feared, he found the donkey on a cold concrete floor, with no food or water. He took him up to his own room, where they shared a blanket.
Roger: But this man takes care of his donkey. What about himself?
Murshid: His donkey is his deeper, truer self. The part of him that needs the most care.
Pin the tale: Where do you most need to look after yourself?
