Guarding the Door
Love and Service as the Greater Prayer
Roger: It’s easy to tell myself I’m on the spiritual path if I rigidly adhere to certain rituals. One time I actually didn’t pick up the phone for someone reaching out for help, since I hadn’t finished my morning meditation.
Murshid: Yes. It is indeed easy to lose sight of what is most important on the path. Always remember: more than your individual devotion, love and service becomes the greatest prayer.
On a cold night some mystics sought shelter in a room to pray. When they finished their devotions and retired to bed, they wondered about their friend.
“We missed you around our prayer circle,” they told him.
“Sorry,” he replied. “I didn’t want you to get too cold as you prayed, so I decided to stand outside and block the missing door.”
Pin the Tale: Where can you most practice love and service today as the greatest prayer?
