Accepting Our Roles
ALL of our Roles
Roger: Sometimes I think of life like a play or a movie.
Murshid: I hope you see yourself as an actor. If you’re the director, then you’re playing God. I don’t want to see that show!
Roger: Yes, an actor. I love so many of my roles: a parent, a husband, a college professor, a writer. But even within these parts, there are scenes I really don’t want to play.
Murshid: Welcome to the drama of life! How great to be a doctor, a teacher, or a mystic. But who wants to get cancer or lose a child? Maybe we tell ourselves thank God we haven’t been cast in those roles. Okay. Sooner or later, though, we all suffer great loss. Ultimately, we’ll play the part of the dying.
Roger: I think we tell ourselves if we’re big enough stars, we can turn down scripts we don’t like.
Murshid: Yes. And the fact that we can’t casts us all into this beautiful tragedy.
